Nicaragua - Country of lakes and volcanoes

San Carlos

If you are going to visit the River San Juan or the surrounding area it is inevitable to pass by the city of San Carlos. The town was founded over 400 years ago as a strategic military position but today it is used for crossing the border, both legally and illegally, to Costa Rica. San Carlos is isolated and difficult to reach by road that force the inhabitants to visit their southern neighbor even for shopping and services. A fire destroyed greater parts of the town in 1984, the reconstruction has been simple but nevertheless the city is still surrounded by water on three sides and there is a big tourist potential for the future.
