Nicaragua - Country of lakes and volcanoes

Nature Reserve Volcano Mombacho

Volcan Mombacho, easily reached from Managua, Granada or Masaya, is protected as part of the Volcan Mombacho Nature Reserve. The peak has a height of 1345 m and the trails through this misty cloud forest are supposed to be the best-developed hike in the country. The trails pass various so called fumaroles, holes in the ground where hot sulfurous air is coming out, and great views of Granada and the islands of Lago de Nicaragua. Hundreds of species of orchids, bromeliads and other flora inhabits the 700-hectare park, which as well offer exclusive wildlife watching.

On the slopes of the volcano numerous farms and coffee plantations are located and on a plateau of 1150 meters you can visit the Volcan Mombacho biological research center.
