Nicaragua - Country of lakes and volcanoes

Lake of Nicaragua

Lake Nicaragua or Lake Cocibolca as it also is called is the biggest lake in Central America with an area of 8264 square kilometers and a length of 160 kilometers. At some places the depth is as much as 60 meters and the water is considered fairly clean. The lake has about 400 islands divided between three archipelagos. Isletas Archipelago is located southeast of Granada and consists of 354, mainly uninhabited, islands. Zapatera Archipelago is the most significant pre-Columbian site in Nicaragua and Solentiname Archipelago is composed by 36 islands at the southern end of the lake. The eastern parts of the lake are calm and the western parts sometimes a little rougher.

The lake is also famous for inhabiting sawfish, tarpon and the world's only freshwater shark. The shark was first thought to have been trapped in the lake when it lost it's connection with the sea but it is now proved that they have been traveling up the River San Juan and adjusted to the change of salinity in the water on the way. Unfortunately, the shark hasn't been seen for 10 years and it is feared that it now is extinct due to over fishing.
