The Corn Islands
The Corn Islands are composed of two islands, 83 kilometers east of Bluefields on the east coast, the bigger reached by plane, approximately one hour from Managua and the smaller visited by boat, 40 minutes from the bigger island. The population living on the islands are mainly mestizos and some of them descending from European pirates.
The bigger Corn Island has an area of ten square kilometers and is covered by small hills, mangrove swamps and white beaches. North of the island three layers of reef hosting 40 species of coral is to be found and making this a good place for snorkeling.
The smaller island is an idyllic paradise of three square kilometers although a little wilder than its bigger brother. There is no electricity and no phones to be found on the island. Situated on Little Corn Island is Nicaragua's first, biggest and most professional dive shop that offers dives for everyone from beginners to advanced divers in a unique reef system. |
